THE BLACK STUDENT UNION AT WILLIAMS

The point is to assimilate Williams, and not to be assimilated by Williams.  Inherent in this is the ability to see through the core, the foundation of the institution, select what pertains to blacks, and disregard all else.  This ability is not found in any one student and can only be found in a group, in helping each other to realize the pitfalls of the school and to weed all ideas which are detrimental to the development of a sharp, responsible, black elite.  We do not advocate separatism to do this; separatism is detrimental to a deep understanding of the experience of the college.  We do advocate the continuing need for a strong Black Student Union, in which should rest the responsibility of helping all black students in defining their own roles as intellectuals in both the white and black world.  The survival of this institution or one like it is of utmost importance in determining whether Williams is a healthy or pathological environment for young black minds.
