#WeGlobal!!!

African Americans have traveled globally and lived abroad for centuries, but only part of their story has been told.  There have been ebbs and flows of this voluntary movement, but we are currently witnessing an unprecedented level of travel and expatriation.  Why have African Americans decided to move abroad? Where have they gone?  What are the characteristics of this group?  It is difficult to fully analyze these questions because there has never been a global survey of African Americans who are living abroad.

After more than a year of work with an Advisory Committee and a network of #WeGlobal Ambassadors around the world, the online survey has just been launched at www.aalivingabroad.org!!!

#WeGlobal is a comprehensive program of interrelated initiatives that we believe will benefit current and future generations of African Americans.  We imagine interactive exhibits at museums, study abroad programs, a series of regional international conferences leading to a global gathering of African Americans living abroad, and the online study provides the foundation to create them.

For all these reasons and more, we need as many African Americans as possible – all around the world – to participate in this global effort.  If you know any African Americans currently living abroad, please tell them to participate in the survey!  This project gives them an opportunity to tell their story and share their experiences living abroad with others.

Deborah Robinson ’78 is the Director of #WeGlobal: African Americans Living Abroad Research and Education Program and Co-Principal Investigator of the #WeGlobal Study, which is being conducted in partnership with the University of Michigan.
